Using MLA Citation

Essay 1: Both the first and final draft of this essay did not have any kind of citation after the quotes. The introductions or analyses of each quote provided the person from which the quote originated, but did not provide where in the respective reading the quote came from. My first draft did not include a works cited page, and my final draft did. I know that after every quote there should be a page number for quotes cited from a reading and a time for quotes cited from a video. Proper quotations and works cited pages are necessary for any piece using information you did not have prior to the assignment, otherwise you face the chance of accidentally plagiarizing.

Final Draft

Essay 2: This essay was much better than my first essay in terms of using proper MLA format. I added in a citation I had forgotten for a paraphrase and a signal phrase, however, I am missing the comma between my signal phrases and quotes. My first draft did not include a works cited page while my final draft did.

The general formula to follow:

signal phrase, comma, quote, page number, period

Alexandra Samuel reports, “when I read accounts of those who’ve gone offline for a weekend, a holiday, or the 40 days of Lent, they often seem wistful for how [they] feel” (1).

*the authors’ last name is not needed if they are mentioned in the signal phrase
